Muhammad al-Atawneh is an associate professor in the Department of Middle East Studies at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. His expertise expands across various areas of Islamic and Arabic culture and society, including the interaction of contemporary Islamic law, society, and governance in the Arab and Islamic world, and in contemporary Islamic thought. His other main area of research is on Islam in Israel, particularly on the sociopolitical identity of Muslims in Israel, but also their perspectives and attitudes toward the state of Israel and its societies, and their practices as Muslims in the Jewish-majority country.
